The Temple of the Archangel Michael, located in Alupka, is one of the largest religious buildings in Crimea - it can accommodate more than 900 people. And the history, I must say, of this place is no less impressive. Once on the site of this church there was a cathedral, built during the reign of the famous Count Vorontsov. The church that we can contemplate today was erected at the beginning of the 20th century under the leadership of the architect Khrisanf Vasiliev. The architect chose for his future masterpiece the traditional and very popular Russian-Byzantine style, which organically combines the features of both northern and southern architecture.

The material that was used in its construction gave a special originality to the appearance of the church. Namely - Inkerman and Kerch stones, which have a rare color and texture. It should be noted also the magnificent monumental iconostasis, on which the real masters of painting worked. The church was consecrated on the day of the celebration of the Archangel - November 8, 1908. But, unfortunately, the temple did not manage to exist for a long time in a peaceful prosperous country. The First World War began, then the bloody October coup took place, and then the Civil War came. After the last parts of the Russian army left the peninsula, the Bolsheviks did not fail to plunder the churches of the whole Crimea, and Alupka in particular. Vorontsov Palace in Alupka

The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael did not escape this sad fate. Naturally, after visiting the church in 1922, the so-called special commission, the temple lost all values.

In 1927, a large earthquake happened in the Crimea, during which the cathedral was significantly damaged and was declared unfit for restoration. The crosses were removed from its still beautiful and proud heads, after which they were transferred to storage facilities. It goes without saying that the representatives of the new government did not care much about the condition of the temple premises. So by the time when, a little over 60 years after the collapse of the Soviets, the temple was again handed over to the Orthodox Church and filled with believers, its condition was very far from ideal.

At that time, all services were held in the basement, as this was the safest place to pray.

The incredible efforts of the rector of the church Valery Boyarintsev and the entire parish carried out restoration work, which continued until 2009. The temple acquired its original appearance a little more than a hundred years after its consecration. Today it is the main place for many believers in Alupka and the true decoration of this southern city.

The Temple of the Archangel Michael is located on the slope of a green mountain, its solemn golden domes look incredibly beautiful against the background of lush greenery and a bright blue piercing sky. No less beautiful are the walls of the building, made of local stone rocks of amazing color combinations. Decorated with intricate cornices, kokoshniks and other architectural delights that distinguish the Russian-Byzantine style, the temple attracts literally all eyes with its solemn and sublime appearance. Museum of amet khan sultan in alupka
