You notice St. Olaf's Tower almost immediately, as soon as you enter Vyborg: after all, it is both a historical monument and the dominant structure of an old Swedish fortification, erected by the Scandinavians at the end of the distant 13th century.

A bit of history

According to legend, the tower bears the name of one of the Scandinavian rulers of the Middle Ages. Since the name Olaf is one of the most common in Scandinavia, it is not entirely clear which one. Vyborzhians prefer to think that the most famous is the Norwegian king Olaf, the baptist of Scandinavia. It is interesting that this particular tower remained the tallest in Northern Europe for a long time. Being also very powerful, it played at the same time the role of a keep, that is, a castle fortification, which was not only a convenient observation point, but also the last stronghold of the defenders of the castle in the event of a siege or assault.

Pay attention to the location of the keep: it is located inside the castle walls, like a real “fortress within a fortress”. Read this article of Alexander Palace in Pushkin

What to see

Today the view of the tower is somewhat different from the original, although even now its walls are impressive and are thicker than the walls of the castle itself. Outside, the tower consists of two tiers, the first of which is a powerful almost cubic base, and the second, higher one, is a polyhedron. In both tiers, narrow loopholes characteristic of such structures were made. This powerful structure is crowned with a hemispherical dome with a small spire. The dome encloses an observation deck in a circle, where you can get there for a symbolic fee, in order to enjoy the view of the old low-rise city buildings from more than 70 meters in height, admire the building of the former town hall and the panorama of the Vyborg Bay.

Jazz festivals are regularly held on the territory of the castle; you have a chance to listen to music right from the walls of the medieval tower.
