Denisova Cave in Altai Republic

Denisova Cave is a unique natural and archaeological monument of the Altai Territory, as well as an important tourist site, where thousands of tourists flock every year. It is easy to walk here, and excursions inside the cave are carried out without special equipment, and therefore it is accessible to many. Due to its advantageous location - on a gentle slope, protected from all sides and at the same time with access directly to the water - Denisova Cave in ancient times served as a refuge for both people and animals. It is not surprising that so many archaeological finds, remains of ancient animals and even humans have been found inside the cave, which have become a real sensation for modern scientists.

The cave is located on the right bank of the small local river Anui, about 28 m above its waters. Its area is nearly 270 sq. m, but the most interesting for archaeologists is the grotto in front of the entrance - the very shelter for all living things, saving from the bad weather. It was known about Denisova cave for a long time, but not a single scientist attached serious importance to it. Rarely did pilgrims visit this place, because the cave was considered the abode of St. Elder Dionysius (hence the name). But real archaeological research began to be carried out here only at the end of the 70s of the last century.

In terms of the quantity and "quality" of archaeological finds, more precisely, in terms of their significance and temporal coverage, experts compare the Denisov Cave with the pyramids of Giza in Egypt! And although excavations have been going on for over 30 years, archaeologists still find something new and unknown. Scientists have set up a camp here, which has grown from a field camp into a full-fledged research station. In the cave, 22 so-called lithological horizons were uncovered - historical layers, in other words. Each of them confirmed that during different eras the cave was inhabited by people.

But the most sensational was the discovery of the remains of an ancient man - a phalanx of fingers and a tooth.

Having deciphered the genome of the bone tissue, scientists came to the conclusion that before homo sapiens came to Siberia, it was inhabited by a previously unknown type of people, a distant "relative" of the Neanderthal man who lived about 50 thousand years ago. The working name of the ancient population is "Denisovets" or "Altai man". This find attracted scientists from all over the world to Denisova Cave, and today the theory of new ancient people is being tested for authenticity.

Practical information
