Skiing - Sports In Russia

The climate of Russia with its long winners and high snow cover is as if created for skiing. However, for a long time, skis were only a means of transportation. In the notes of foreign ambassadors, there are references to "devices for sliding on the snow". Skiing began to be viewed as a sport at the end of the 19th century, when the first ski race took place in Moscow in 1896, and skiers' unions began to form throughout the country. In 1910, the first All-Russian skiing championship was held.

The benefits of skiing for health improvement and physical education were highly appreciated in the USSR and began to actively popularize them. On collective farms, in factories, among students, winter ski holidays were held everywhere. In 1920, the country's men's championship took place, a year later - the women's championship. Other types of skiing also developed: ski jumping, ski marathons. During the second World War, ski training came in handy: opponents called Soviet ski battalions "the white death". Find Your Exact Age

Until the end of the 40s, skiing in the USSR developed in isolation and the lack of experience in international competitions prevented Soviet skiers from achieving high results on them. However, this gap was soon closed: from the 1954 world cup, the USSR brought four gold medals and one silver. The whole world learned the names of Mikhail Kuzin and Lyubov Kozyreva. Two years later, they became Olympic Champions. Soviet skiers posed a serious threat to their competitors in races and relay races, and the women's part of the national team often won almost all the prizes.

In the 60s,the honor of the country was defended by Alevtina Kolchina and the legendary Galina Kulakova (four-time Olympic champion and nine-time world champion). In the 70s and 80s, Raisa Smetanina, the only skier in the world who won medals at 5 Winter Olympics in a row, took up the baton of victories. Ski racer Nikolai Zimyatov became a four-time Olympic champion. In the 90s, multiple Olympic and World champions Elena Vyalbe, Larisa Lazutina and Olga Danilova shone.

In the 2000s, their success was repeated by Yulia Chepalova. And in recent years, male skiers have taken the lead: the multi-day Tour de Ski in 2013 was won by the Olympic champion Alexander Legkov; Maxim Vylegzhanin shows high results in sprint, marathon and skiathlon. One of the most talented athletes is sprinter Nikita Kryukov: Olympic champion and twice world champion. Must See Sites in Yekaterinburg City
